How to apply a sermon during the week: a simple 3-step plan
3 October 2026 · 5 min read
You leave church stirred. By Tuesday you can't remember the title. It isn't a lack of faith; it's how memory works. What we don't use, we lose. The fix isn't more notes. It's a small plan for the week.
Here's a simple plan that works with any sermon, in three parts: what you'll say, what you'll pray and what you'll do.
Step 1: Say it (confessions)
Take the main truth of the message and turn it into a short, first-person statement you can say out loud each day. Saying it shapes how you see your week.
- Message on God's provision: "My Father knows what I need, and I will not be anxious today."
- Message on forgiveness: "I have been forgiven much, so I choose to forgive quickly."
- Message on courage: "The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid to do what's right."
Keep them short and rooted in the scripture that was preached. Two or three is plenty.
Step 2: Pray it (prayer points)
Turn the message into two or three things to pray about this week. Give each one a short focus so you can remember it, then a sentence or two of prayer.
- For yourself: where this message touches your life right now.
- For someone else: a person who came to mind during the sermon.
- For your church or community: how this truth could shape them.
Step 3: Do it (action steps)
This is where hearing becomes doing. Choose up to three small actions you can realistically finish this week. Small is the point: a step you actually do beats a big intention you don't.
A good action step has three things: a clear action, a person or place, and a time. For example:
- Call my uncle on Thursday evening and apologise for last month.
- Give ₦5,000 to the widow on our street before Saturday.
- Read Psalm 23 every night this week before I sleep.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.”
Check in midweek
On Wednesday, look back at your three steps. Tick off what you've done and pick one to do today. If something isn't realistic anymore, swap it for something you can do. Progress matters more than perfection.
Make it automatic
The Doer Life builds this plan for you from any sermon: confessions, prayer points and three action steps, grounded in what was actually preached. It tracks the steps you finish and sends a gentle reminder in the morning and afternoon so the message doesn't fade.
